MOTIVATIONS FROM THE GHETTO BY Areogun Bolaji

"I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do! That is character!" -Theodore Roosevelt

From the previous post, you all know that, growing up, we had two toilets meant for everyone in the compound of about 30 families; but I never gave a clue about how the toilet looked it, it was pit latrine. #cover nose, spit out

Both toilets, had no seat, we had to set the hole perfectly for "it" to get in, at times we younger ones, used the potty popularly called 'poh'

One truth that thought me is that, having a place you can literally take a shit and empty everything inside you is what matters most at such a time.

You see, the toilet is a sacred place apart from the fact it makes you feel lighter, it reduces all the tension in your body, it does relaxes and for some few minutes for those that are like me, it becomes a place to do your thinking, I get some of my greatest mental work done there.

However there were times when the toilet that gave us the greatest comfort started becoming a menace; it was caused us pain, the influx of cockroach in the house - all of the house, I mean, they messed up our peaceful live and the kitchen wasn't spared.

Not too long, someone in the house noticed and suggested that we always cover that hole with a tray, it worked like magic. Then I noticed, a smart person can make a difference.

Take a closer look, you'll see that the toilet is a perfect example of most of us; when people see us they like us, they want to be around us 'cause of the comfort we give. Things seem great when we are beside them, the confidence we elude that makes people feel good and happy around us.

It is therefore sad when we don't take care of the things inside us our character flaws which could make us stink, like the Yoruba proverb said our character is like flames you could cover it but it would surely come out.

You see just because of our flaws we have lost a lot of deals and relationships in the past; we go on pointing accusing fingers saying people did you wrong (don't get me wrong there are bad people) but I love the way the good book put it "try removing the log from your own eyes before removing the speck from  another's", and besides, it is pointless to worry about something that is out of your control when you the only thing you can change, control and make better is you.

"No change of circumstances can repair a defect of character." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
